What is The Maths Factor Course?
At the heart of The Maths Factor is The Maths Factor Course. The Course is organised into 32 topics, designed so that children continuously build on and practise basic arithmetic skills, particularly: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Children progress through the topics by completing daily sessons.
The topics
The topics are in sequence with the national curriculum. The Maths Factor Course has 3 main 'stages', each represented by a bird character:
- Explorer bird: Key Stage 1 level topics
- Adventurer bird: Lower Key Stage 2 level topics
- Pioneer bird: Upper Key Stage 2 level topics
To make sure that we don't interfere with what children are being taught in school, we cover all of the key teaching methods.
Our topic tree shows you all of the topics in sequence.
The sessions
The Maths Factor's short sessions have been designed for daily use - repetition consolidates learning, so we want children to practice, practice, practice! We teach concepts in small steps, emphasising fun and ultimately increasing children's confidence.
Each session starts with a lively video tutorial by Carol, followed by a fun warm-up and then a practice. There are over 1,000 of these sessions, arranged within the 32 topics. Visit our topic tree to view sample sessions.
Will the Course topics match what my child is working on in school?
It's important to us that all children learn at the pace that's right for them and that they are supported whatever their level.
With this is mind, although the topics are aligned with national curriculum levels, The Maths Factor Course will not necessarily coincide with what your child is working on in school, but support your child in their learning at the level that is right for them. Your child will progress through the topics in order (although you can change the topic that your child is working on, if you wish).
Where can I learn more about what's covered in each course topic?
If you'd like some information on the material covered in each topic, including the topics' corresponding school years, please see our Topic Guide
(Note that we don't show this age guidance to the children, so they have the option of working at their own speed.)
How many questions are in each practice session?
- All Year 1 topics: 12 questions only
- Year 2 topics (More adding up, More subtracting): 18 questions
- Year 2 topic (1,2,5,10 Times table): 24 questions
- Year 3-6 topics: 24 questions
What are The Maths Factor Clubs?
All of The Maths Factor's products are included in your subscription.
Under the 'Games and fun!' tab, you'll find our Games Centre, along with our Revision Clubs, Times Tables Catch-up, and Mighty Algebra Club.
Revision Clubs
The Revision Clubs are a great way to boost your child's confidence, particularly before their SATs or 11 Plus tests. The Clubs target specific topics, providing clear step-by-step worked examples, video lessons, and over 1000 practice questions. Children earn gold stars for their achievements in the Revision Clubs, so the Clubs are a fun way to build in some extra practice.
Times Tables Catch-up
Here, children can practise their times tables by watching video lessons, completing practice sessions, and even downloading the MP3 tracks for the times tables songs.
Mighty Algebra Club
The Mighty Algebra Club is open to all children who are subscribed to The Maths Factor, though we particularly recommend it for children aged 9-11. Lessons with Carol, along with opportunities to complete practice sessons and to earn gold stars, provide a good introduction to the topic of algebra.
What are the Summer and Winter Clubs, and when do they open?
These are our seasonally-themed Clubs, designed to allow children to practise what they've learnt over the school year and to stay entertained during the school holidays. The clubs will be open for 3 months from the 1st July and 1st December.
There is a Club for each school year group, plus an extra 'challenge' Club for year 6 children to help them to prepare for secondary school.
What is the 30 Day Challenge?
To encourage daily practice, we've created the 30 Day Challenge. Your child can start the challenge on any day, and just needs to complete one session per day for 30 days. If your child completes all 30 days of the challenge, they'll receive our 30 Day Challenge medal template so they can make their own medal at home!
They can also obtain virtual awards for completing a specific number of days in the challenge as follows:
- 15 ticks = Bronze Cup
- 20 ticks = Silver Goblet
- 25 ticks = Gold Trophy
- 30 ticks = Make your own Medal template! (There are 10 medals and 2 cups to collect)
Why aren't all Games centre games open from the start?
The games have been ordered to match those in the bird stages: that is, they've been organised according to their key stage level.
Children need to have covered the material in earlier games in order to unlock the later, more complex ones.
What is the Champ score in the Games centre?
Each game has a 'champ score' - that's the highest score that any child has achieved on that particular game.
What is Marble Pachinko?
Your child can use the marbles they have been collecting to play Marble Pachinko. It's our fun little game where they win tokens towards a charity: The RSPB, Tiggywinkles or Dogs for Good. Your child should encounter this new feature when they finish a session, alternatively it can be found on the home page when they are signed in.
You can start playing marble Pachinko when your child gets 10 marbles.
Your child will be awarded with their first gold marble when they collect 150 marbles and then another gold marble for every 50 after that. For example, if your child enters the game with 160 marbles they will be playing with 110 marbles and 1 gold marble. If we gave a gold marble at 50 marbles then your child child would only have 2 marbles to drop when they have 51 marbles and so the game would be finished very quickly.
They will not lose any marbles when they play the game, they will keep adding to them as they complete more sessions having more marbles to play with as they progress through the course so a better chance of earning more tokens for their favourite charity.
My child's progress
Your child can progress through their Maths Factor Course, in sequence, from the 'Home' page alone. From when they are aged 5 until they are 11 (or older), your child need only access this page - it's beautifully simple.
However, we know that you'll want to support your child's learning, particularly if they're finding a topic tricky, and be kept updated on how they're doing.
Click on a question below for the answer.
How can I find out how my child is doing?
There are various ways that you can monitor your child's progress.
Progress emails
You can receive progress emails to notify you when your child is starting a new module, when they've finished a topic, or if they've struggled with a session. You can set if/when you'd like to receive these emails from the 'Email Settings' page in your parent zone.
Parent zone - view your child's progress
You can see how your child is doing at a glance by viewing their progress in your parent zone. There, you can see how many topics, modules and sessions your child has completed, as well as how they scored in their last session.
After each session, you can view your child's 'Results Card'. This contains information on your child's score, including the answers they got right and any they got wrong (including the correct answer).
You can view the results of all of your children's previous sessions by clicking on 'See complete learning history' (in the 'Last Session' box).
Course topics page
For a broader overview of how your child is progressing through The Maths Factor Course, you can go to their 'Course topics' page. From this page alone, you can see all of the topics in the course, the number of sessions in each topic, the topics your child has completed, where they're currently working, and those topics yet to be completed.
Tower of Achievements
Under the 'Games and fun!' tab, you can click to view the Tower of Achievements. This shows you and your child all of their achievements on The Maths Factor to date, and encourages them to keep going and reach the next milestone.
How can I support my child's learning on The Maths Factor?
There are plenty of ways you can support your child's learning on The Maths Factor. These include:
Carol's advice for parents
You'll receive regular updates on your child's progress, containing advice from Carol and links to selected printable resources.
You can also view Carol's advice by clicking on the blue 'Carol's advice for parents' marble from the 'Home' tab.
Printable resources
All of our products have supplementary printable resources and games, which you can use away from the computer.
You can find all of the resources by going to the 'Games and fun!' tab and clicking on 'Print and play'.
The resources which show automatically will be those for the Course topic that your child is currently working on, but you can use the dropdown arrows to view resources for other products/topics.
Video search
If you think that your child would benefit from watching a video lesson again, or you'd just like to look through the videos, you can find them all via our 'Video search' (under the 'Games and fun!' tab).
Your child can also add videos to their 'Favourites', so that they can find them easily again in future.
What is the Tower of Achievements?
The Tower of Achievements can be found under the 'Games and fun!' tab. It's a fun way for children to look at all they've achieved on The Maths Factor so far, and encourages them to make the next milestone.
Why is it saying that my child is struggling?
If your child gets less than 40% in a session, it may stop their practice part way through, and a message appears saying "You seem to be struggling with this practice. Why don't you come back tomorrow and have another go?"
Please try to complete the session later making sure you watch Carol's teaching video before the practice.
What are the 'Total marbles' and 'Total correct answer' counters?
'Total marbles' counter
Each time your child completes a session, they will get a marble. The 'Total marbles' counter therefore records how many sessions, in total, your child has completed. (Please note that if your child repeats a session that they've previously completed, they will not be awarded a second marble for that session.)
'Total correct answers' counter
This counter records the number of correct answers, at first attempt, for practice sessions completed in the 'main' Maths Factor Course and in the Maths Factor Clubs.
How do you get gold stars?
Gold stars are awarded by doing practices in our club sessions. These include the Revision Clubs, Mighty Algebra and the Summer & Winter Clubs (when they open). These are all found under the 'Games and fun!' section.
How many sessions should my child do per day/week?
It's up to you and your child - there's no minimum/maximum number of sessions to be completed per day.
However, we do recommend that your child aims to do 1 session per day (so, 5 sessions per week). Regularity helps to consolidate learning, but we don't want to overload your child, either!
My child is finding the course too easy/too difficult. What can I do?
We recommend having a look at our Topic Guide, so that you can see whereabouts in the Course your child is currently working. You can then change the topic to one you think is more appropriate for their current level.
(Note that we don't show the topic age guidance to the children, so they have the option of working at their own speed.)

The link to the printable resource in my parent email doesn't work
The links to the printable resources in the parent emails will expire after 3 days. You can find all of the resources via the 'Games and fun' tab, under 'Print and play'.
Why is my child getting logged out of sessions?
Please don’t use your parent login on more than one device, you can only be logged into The Maths Factor on one device at a time. If you log into a second device, the first device will be logged out but your child (if they’re using it) may not notice and their results won’t be saved.
Your children can be signed in to The Maths Factor at the same time when they sign in using their own login details via the child sign-in page.
You can view and edit your child's username and password as follows:
- Sign in to your 'Parent Zone'
- Go to 'My children settings'
- Select your child
- Here you can view your child's username and also add a password.
My child's results didn't save
There are a couple of reasons that your child's results aren't saving:
1. Please don’t use your parent login on more than one device.
You can only be logged into The Maths Factor on one device at a time.
If you log into a second device, the first device will be logged out but your child (if they’re using it) may not notice and their results won’t be saved.
2. The session is timing out.
For security reasons, the session will time out after 40 minutes.
If your child starts their practice session, but the session is left idle for more than 40 minutes (or your child takes longer than 40 minutes to complete the session), the results may not save.
3. The WiFi connection has been lost.
If you connect to the internet via WiFi the results may not save if you lose your WiFi connection.
This could be because you have a weak signal or you have moved out of range or the service is lost.

I'm having technical difficulties accessing the site
Please could you try:
- Clearing your browser cache, then trying again
- Accessing The Maths Factor via a different browser (e.g. Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox etc)
If you are still having technical difficulties accessing the site, please could you contact our Support team here, and tell us:

- Do the videos play when accessed via the video search (under 'Games and fun'), or is it the case that they don't play in the video search or in the session?
- What happens when you click on the video icon? For example, does the screen go blank, can you see the video but not play it, does the play button show etc? Are any error messages shown?
- Is this a recent issue? Have you been able to view videos before?
I'm using my tablet to access The Maths Factor, and am having problems playing the video lessons. What can I do?
The first thing to check is that you have sufficient internet connection/speed to play the videos. Problems with the videos pausing and/or buffering are likely to be due to poor connection. The videos will probably play better if you are connected to WiFi (instead of 3G/4G).
If you have sufficient internet connection, but are still experiencing problems with the videos, please could you try:
- Clearing your browser cache, then trying again
- Accessing The Maths Factor via a different browser (e.g. Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox etc)
